Memphis Pop

Women of Strength, Women of Color is the eighth installment of the Connections Exhibit Series.

This series, which the Museum began in 2005, focuses on African American history. The exhibit will feature African American women who have had a lasting impact on Memphis. The exhibit will chronicle the lives of women of varied backgrounds and talents. The women lived from the mid-nineteenth century to present day; some were born into slavery, others came from well-to-do homes. They include musicians, journalists, lawyers, Civil Rights activists and educators. They are all strong African American women who have a made a difference in Memphis:

Lizzie Douglas (Memphis Minnie) – Blues musician
Frances Hooks – Activist
Julia Hooks – Classical musician, civic worker
Claudine Penn – Police Captain
Maxine Smith – Activist
Rochelle Stevens – Olympic athlete
Ida B. Wells-Barnett – Journalist, activist
